Project | We had the wonderful experience of creating a video game for an interactive installation in the children's section of the Argentine Library. It's an arcade-style trivia game that pays homage to the work of Ayax Barnes. Children and their accompanying adults play and learn in a colorful environment filled with characters and short stories. At the end of the game, they are rewarded by the princess of a magical castle with a recommendation for a book available in the library. - The work process began with meetings with the professional directors of the library. Step by step, we shaped an arcade-style trivia with an aesthetic tribute to Ayax's work. We carefully selected characters, landscapes, and elements from Ayax's universe that were aesthetically pleasing and functional for the arcade we aimed to create. The user experience was defined, and animations were scripted for each character; for example, 'Little Red Riding Hood wouldn't just get scared when the wolf shows its teeth, but she would also gather courage and scare the wolf.' We also defined which elements would play an important role in different stages of the game. For instance, 'Mr. and Mrs. would be the characters lifting score and time cards, reacting with different emotions based on whether the answer was correct or incorrect.' The game script was developed, and we moved on to designing the interfaces. Finally, everything was implemented in Unity, and the game was developed and compiled.
- "The Know-It-All" starts with a home screen or stationary mode where a lively, colorful, and dynamic composition showcases various beings from Barnes' universe engaging in different actions. By pressing a sign, you initiate the game and choose the level based on the player's age. The level determines the difficulty of the trivia questions. Then, the trivia begins: a head located in the center of the screen explodes, revealing questions and their possible answers. There's a point counter, a time counter, and a reward for correct or incorrect answers. After completing the series of questions, you enter a bonus track: a castle with several illuminated windows. You choose one of the windows and receive a higher or lower number of points. Finally, a princess emerges from the castle, congratulates you on your total score, and recommends a book from the library. The ranking is displayed, and if you enter, you can input your initials.
It was a beautiful project that allowed us to explore and immerse ourselves in Ayax Barnes' universe and create a splendid arcade that not only provides entertainment and learning but is also filled with small stories narrated simultaneously, inspired by the brilliance with which this Argentine illustrator gave personality and beauty to each of his creations.
